Abu Simbel — Ramesses II, 65 metres above where he was carved.

Between 1964 and 1968 both temples here were cut into more than a thousand blocks and rebuilt 65 metres higher and 200 metres back, ahead of Lake Nasser filling behind the Aswan High Dam. The reconstruction is precise enough that the original solar alignment still holds: twice a year the sun reaches 60 metres into the sanctuary and lights three of the four seated gods, leaving Ptah, of the underworld, in shadow.
