Temple of Edfu

Temple of Edfu, Edfo, Aswan, Egypt

Horus at Edfu — the most complete temple in Egypt.

Edfu survives because it was buried: desert sand and village building filled it to the capitals until Auguste Mariette cleared it in the 1860s. It is entirely Ptolemaic, begun in 237 BC and finished 180 years later, and its walls carry the fullest surviving account of temple ritual anywhere — the founding ceremony, the festival calendar, and the annual drama of Horus defeating Set.
