Abydos — the King List and the finest relief in Egypt.

Sety I's temple holds the best raised relief anywhere in Egypt, cut in fine limestone and still carrying original colour. Its corridor bears the Abydos King List, seventy-six cartouches naming the pharaohs Sety recognised as legitimate — Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Smenkhkare, Tutankhamun and Ay are all absent, deliberately. Behind the temple lies the Osireion, a subterranean structure of massive unadorned granite whose date is still argued over.
