Thebes, on the east bank.

Built largely by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II, and joined to Karnak by a three-kilometre avenue of sphinxes that was re-excavated and reopened in 2021. One of its two obelisks still stands at the entrance; the other has been in the Place de la Concorde since 1836. A mosque built for Abu al-Haggag sits high on the temple wall, its floor at the level of the debris that filled the site before excavation — the clearest illustration in Egypt of how deeply these buildings were buried.
